Steelers defeat Browns, 15-10

The Steelers lost kicker Chris Boswell to a concussion but still found a way to beat the Browns, 15-10, this afternoon in Cleveland.

The Steelers’ third straight victory improved their record to 4-3.

The Browns fell to 4-4.

Inside linebacker Joe Schobert’s forced fumble and outside linebacker T.J. Watt’s recovery at the Steelers’ 20-yard line after a completion from quarterback Baker Mayfield to wide receiver Jarvis Landry helped preserved a five-point Steelers’ lead with 6:04 left in the fourth quarter.

The Steelers punted the ball back to the Browns, who took over at their 39 with 4:22 left in regulation.

This time the Browns reached the Steelers’ 24, but they went backwards from there after running back Nick Chubb lost a yard and wide receiver Rashard Higgins was penalized 5 yards for a false start.

The possession ended when Mayfield couldn’t connect with Landry, who was being defended by free safety Minkah Fitzpatrick, on fourth-and-12 from the Steelers’ 26 just inside the two-minute warning.

A 50-yard pass from quarterback Ben Roethlisberger to wide receiver Diontae Johnson helped the Steelers run out the clock.

The Steelers took their first lead in dramatic fashion when Roethlisberger found tight end Pat Freiermuth for a touchdown on fourth-and-goal from the Browns’ 2 with 11:04 left in the fourth.The Steelers went for two with Boswell unavailable and Roethlisberger’s pass for Johnson fell incomplete, which kept the Steelers’ advantage at 15-10.

The Browns broke a 3-3 tie thanks to big plays made on their first possession of the third quarter.

A 21-yard gain by Chubb and a 21-yard completion from Mayfield to tight end Harrison Bryant highlighted an eight-play, 86-yard march in 4:19 that was finished off on a 10-yard touchdown scamper by running back D’Ernest Johnson. Kicker Chase McLaughlin’s extra point gave Cleveland a 10-3 lead with 9:36 left in the quarter.

The Steelers countered with a 12-play, 78-yard drive in 5:57 that brought them back to within a point.

Running back Najee Harris found the end zone on second-and-6 from the Browns’ 8-yard line, but the Steelers again opted to go for two rather than have punter Pressley Harvin III attempt to kick the extra point.Roethlisberger crossed the goal line on an empty-set keeper, but the conversion was nullified by a holding penalty on center Kendrick Green. Roethlisberger threw incomplete on the re-try from the Browns’ 12 when he was hit while releasing the ball by defensive end Myles Garrett.

The Steelers’ defense was impactful throughout the first half.

The Browns drove 63 yards on 13 plays after receiving the opening kickoff but ultimately settled for a 30-yard field goal by McLaughlin after achieving a first-and-goal at the Steelers’ 8.

Cleveland was turned away empty on its next possession when Chubb was dropped for a loss of 1 on fourth-and-1 from the Steelers’ 39.

The Steelers responded with a 10-play, 47-yard drive in 5:36 that ended on a 31-yard field goal from Boswell that tied the game at 3-3 with 9:18 left in the second quarter.

The Browns’ next two possessions ended with three-and-outs.

The Steelers had a chance to grab the lead with less that two minutes remaining in the half but opted for a fake field goal on fourth-and-9 from the Browns’ 10. Boswell’s pass for tight end Zack Gentry in the end zone fell incomplete and Boswell was injured when he got blasted by defensive tackle Jordan Elliott after throwing the ball.

The Steelers took a knee after taking over following a punt and 19-yard return by wide receiver Ray-Ray McCloud to the Steelers’ 35 with 21 seconds remaining before the break.

The Steelers went to the locker room at halftime with a slight edge in total net yards (137-132), and having gained 75 yards on the ground to the Browns’ 40.

The Browns took the field leading the NFL in rushing (170.4 yards per game), yards per carry (5.36), rushing first downs (70) and rushing touchdowns (13, tied).

The Steelers also amassed four sacks in the opening 30 minutes (outside linebacker T.J. Watt had 1.5, defensive linemen Isaiahh Loudermilk and Chris Wormley had one and defensive tackle Cam Heyward had a half of a sack).

Saints capitalize on Seahawks’ mistakes for 13-10 win

SEATTLE (AP) — Alvin Kamara and Jameis Winston were the happy beneficiaries of the Seattle Seahawks’ many mistakes.

Then it was rookie Brian Johnson’s turn to make sure the New Orleans Saints got the win they needed to keep pace in the NFC South.

“In a game like this where things are close, things get a little a little ugly towards the end, it builds confidence to be able to come into a game like this and close it out the way we did,” Saints defensive end Cameron Jordan said.

Johnson kicked a 33-yard field goal with 1:56 remaining in his NFL debut, and New Orleans outlasted Seattle 13-10 on Monday night.

Kamara carried the load for New Orleans and Winston made a handful of plays when needed, but the Saints (4-2) escaped Seattle thanks largely to a series of blunders by the home team, which is sorely missing injured quarterback Russell Wilson.

Two of the Seahawks’ biggest mistakes came on New Orleans’ deciding drive when Seattle was flagged for roughing the passer and jumping offside on a long field-goal attempt. Both penalties gave New Orleans first downs, and Johnson’s field goal coming out of the 2-minute warning put the Saints ahead.

Johnson, a rookie from Virginia Tech, made an extra point and both field-goal tries, connecting from 21 yards in the first half.

“It was tough trying to see what the wind was doing because it was changing constantly throughout pregame and the game itself,” Johnson said. “So just stick with my plan that I had coming into it and really focusing on just hitting my ball and hitting good contact that will cut through the wind.”

Geno Smith made his second start at QB for Seattle (2-5) since Wilson suffered a serious finger injury in a loss to the Rams. The backup hit DK Metcalf for an 84-yard touchdown in the first quarter but went nowhere when the Seahawks had a final chance to tie or win.

Smith was sacked on consecutive plays by Malcolm Jenkins and Demario Davis. On fourth-and-28, Smith was pressured again and his throw to Metcalf fell incomplete.

Smith went 12 of 22 for 167 yards — half coming on the TD toss to Metcalf — and was sacked five times as Davis, Cameron Jordan and others made his night uncomfortable.

Seattle has lost three straight for the first time since 2011 and fell to 0-3 at home for the first time since 1992. Although both defeats with Smith under center have been by three points, the Seahawks aren’t the same without Wilson, who’s out until at least mid-November.

“I’ve been here a long time and if we didn’t have Russell, I probably wouldn’t have been here a long time because of all the magic he has created over the years,” coach Pete Carroll said.

Kamara finished with 10 catches for 128 yards and a 13-yard TD reception late in the first half. It was his fifth career regular-season game with double-digit receptions. He rushed for 51 yards.

Winston was 19 of 35 for 222 yards and added 43 yards rushing. He also made enough plays — thanks to Seattle penalties — to get the Saints in range for the winning field goal.

Seattle appeared to get a stop, but Marquise Blair was called for roughing the passer on a third-down sack after hitting Winston with the crown of his helmet. Kamara then sprinted past a blitz for 12 yards on third-and-10 and the Saints were in field-goal range.

Al Woods jumped offside as Johnson lined up for a 43-yard attempt, allowing New Orleans to burn another 90 seconds off the clock before Johnson made the shorter try.

“We got to get right,” Seattle linebacker Bobby Wagner said. “We’ve got to really fix our mistakes, play smarter, make less penalties.”

Seattle’s Jason Myers missed a pair of field goal attempts from 44 and 53 yards — the second into the open end of the stadium after Smith took another costly sack. Myers made a 50-yarder.

Fantasy Football: AJ Green is Someone to Stash on Rosters

It’s time to put some respect on A.J Green’s name in fantasy football.

After a stellar career with the Cincinnati Bengals, Green joined an already full Arizona Cardinals wide receiver room. Despite being buried on the depth chart by DeAndre Hopkins and Christian Kirk, Green has found his place in the Arizona offense.

A.J. Green has been a solid fantasy football WR2/WR3 through four weeks on the NFL season. The new Cardinals wide receiver has been targeted six times in four consecutive weeks. This adds up to a healthy target share at 19.5%.

Green had a disappointing fantasy football season last year. However, a bounce back in 2021 should have been expected. The former Bengals wide receiver is still one of the more talented receivers in the NFL and wouldn’t need to be “the guy” with the Cardinals.

Additionally, Green was in a contract battle with the Bengals and wanted to get paid big again. However, the Bengals decided to hit him with the franchise tag. With no security in case of injury, Green wasn’t happy and he did get hurt playing under the franchise tag. Once a player gets hurt under a contract year or playing under the tag that hurts their value and leverage to cash in a big contract.

Last season in Cincinnati, Burrow and Green didn’t seem to have chemistry. It also seemed as if Green wasn’t interested in going through yet another rebuild. Green’s had an overall negative demeanor in 2020, giving up on routes, having negative body language in the huddle, and was caught on video on the sideline saying “Trade me”.

Add all of those together and you get the result of last season statistically – 104 targets and 47 catches. However, while he had 104 targets, only 63 of those were catchup. That means of the 63 targets, he didn’t come down with 16. That’s not a terrible ratio with a true catch rate at 75%. That’s a healthy number and it’s what we are getting out of him as the number two option in a high-powered Cardinals offense.

Right now, Green is on just 38% of fantasy football rosters. That should make him pretty easy to scoop up on waivers. Green is outscoring players like Juju Smith-Schuster, Robert Woods, Allen Robinson, and CeeDee Lamb in fantasy football points. There’s no reason why he can’t keep this up moving forward.

As mentioned , Green has four consecutive weeks in a row with at least six targets in each game. He also has the same amount of red zone targets as DeAndre Hopkins. This should make fantasy football owners feel good about him finding the endzone on Sundays.

AJ Green might not be an attractive name, but he is someone who is producing right now in fantasy football. The Arizona Cardinals offense is showing no signs of slowing down. If Green continues to be a favorite target of Kyler Murray, he’ll be a must-have on fantasy football rosters.
